Northwest College opened in 1946 with nearly 100 full- and part-time students and three instructors who met in classrooms borrowed from the public school district. Initially called the University of Wyoming Northwest Center, it was established through an agreement with the University of Wyoming and Park County School District No. 1. University support was discontinued in 1950. In 1953 the name was changed to Northwest Community College, and in 1968 the college's tax base was expanded to include all of Park County. The name changed once more to Northwest College in 1989. Over the years, the quality of instruction matured, and a residential campus developed. NWC is far more than a typical two-year college — consider the following points as evidence of that claim.

  • Program breadth: A wide variety of courses supports 54 transfer degrees, 19 technical degrees, and 34 skills certificates. And with Northwest's low tuition, there's no need to feel guilty about exploring before committing to a major.
  • Strong faculty: Students get to know our superb faculty on a first-name basis. Even though they're often called on as experts in their fields, our faculty’s focus is on our students.
  • Rich learning opportunities: Learning awaits our students in and outside the classroom, including academic activities like Livestock Judging and Forensics as well as annual international travel opportunities.
  • Activities: An array of student activities includes intercollegiate athletics, intramural sports, clubs and organizations, student government and more. If you’re on an athletic team, there's a good chance your family and friends can watch via live Webcasts produced by NWC students.
  • Environment: It's all here—a truly collegiate environment boasting five residence halls and more than 50 apartments (find more detail on our campus map and area maps).
