SQA Higher
BBC including one science, from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Human Biology, plus Nat 5 Maths, English and Physics at C
A Level
CC to include one science, from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Human Biology, plus GCSE Maths and Physics at C/4 and English B/6
ILC Higher
H3 H3 H3 to include one science plus Ordinary level Maths, English, and Physics at 02
IB Diploma
24 points including Physics
BTEC Extended Diploma
In Science/Applied Science MMP plus GCSE English at B, Maths, and Physics or Double Science at C/4
College
SWAP Access to Science and Technology/Ophthalmics with BBB on the first attempt and including 65% in Physics module. Science-based HNCs including Physics and Maths with B in the Graded Units. Other science-related HNC qualifications (including Physics) may be considered.
Year 3
HND in relevant subject with AB in the Graded Units.
Your personal statement
Personal statements should state the student's intent of studying ophthalmic dispensing. Some work experience is always useful.
Disclosure requirement
All students are required by the General Optical Council to have been cleared by Disclosure Scotland at the advanced level to work in a clinical situation. Disclosure is sought for the Clinic here at Glasgow Caledonian University and applications will be made during enrolment in the first week of the first year of the course.
This Disclosure certificate once obtained will last for the duration of the course for the GCU clinic premises only.
English language
Applicants whose first language is not English will normally be required to hold IELTS of overall 7.0 with 6.5 in each element or equivalent.

Other academic and vocational qualifications
Each application to GCU is considered on an individual basis. If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognized professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme.
International pathways
If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for the English for University Study programme.

What you will study
Year 1
Foundations of Optics, Ophthalmic Materials, Optical Appliances, Ophthalmic Anatomy and Physiology, Refraction and Binocular Vision.
Year 2
Clinical Dispensing Practice and Communication, Diagnostic Techniques (DO), Refraction and Binocular Vision, Ophthalmic Pathology and Pharmacology, Lighting, Colour and Optical Devices, Ophthalmic Professional Studies, Law & Management, Low Vision.
Year 3
Practice placement route: Dispensing Practice 1 & 2, Investigating Management In Healthcare and Management Planning In Healthcare: Full-time study university route, Investigating Management In Healthcare, New Venture Creation, Contact Lens Studies, Directed Literature and Case Review, Clinical Studies and Review and Advanced Orthoptics 1.
