MSc in Biomedical Engineering Chalmers University of Technology

Introduction
With global life expectancy rising rapidly, healthcare systems urgently need to improve. By bridging the gaps between the design and problem-solving skills of traditional engineering and the medical and biological sciences, biomedical engineering can play a vital role in that journey. And when combined with progress and developments in the field of IT, a new world of possibilities in how health care can be improved and delivered is emerging.
This master's program will provide you with an internationally competitive education, giving you the knowledge and know-how necessary to prepare for a hugely rewarding career in the field. The program will ready you to use engineering skills to improve health care delivery and medical practice. The focus is on biomedical engineering, but you will also have a good platform for working in other related engineering disciplines.
The future of health care will demand technical expertise. Examples, of where biomedical engineering skills are needed, are numerous, from microwave technologies used in stroke detection and brain monitoring, to microwave tomography for 3D breast tumor detection and visualization. Another application is textile-based sensors, which can record electrical activity from the body for monitoring in-home care and other remote settings. Health informatics is another area with a real need for biomedical engineers.
In this program, you will receive instruction from internationally recognized researchers and guest lecturers, work on projects in close collaboration with industry and form part of a highly prominent research environment. The compulsory elements of this program serve as a common foundation within biomedical engineering, while the broad range of elective courses available, covering topics such as medical imaging technology, electronics, and signal processing, will allow you to specialize and achieve the proficiency and depth required for a Master's degree.
In general, education places a specific emphasis on building and refining problem-solving and presentation skills, and teamwork. The Master’s thesis gives you training in individual research, project planning, documentation, and presentation. You will also have excellent opportunities to meet and learn from experts and professionals active in the healthcare industry, through guest lectures and study visits.
Career
The career possibilities for biomedical engineers are both bright and broad. Biomedical engineering is a globally growing future industry and the demand for biomedical engineers will only continually increase.
As a Master of Science (MSc) in biomedical engineering, you can work as a leading specialist and developer and be involved in developing new medical products and services in business or the public sector. You can also work as a product owner, meeting end users to discuss their requirements and wishes for products and systems. You can work as a consultant, where you, for example, help others with the testing and verification of medical products and services including software. You can work as a medical technical engineer in healthcare with risk assessment, deviation management, and training based on medical technology regulations. Skilled AI engineers are in high demand everywhere. With good knowledge and skills in machine learning, you will have a wide range of career opportunities.
The program also qualifies you for postgraduate studies. If you are interested in a future in research and development, you have the possibility of completing an extended master’s thesis project of 60 ECTS credits within the program.
General entry requirements
A Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Technology, or Architecture
To fulfill the general entry requirement for a Master's program at Chalmers (at advanced level/the second cycle), the prospective student must hold a degree that is equivalent to a Swedish Bachelor's degree (minimum 3 years, 180 Swedish higher education credits) in either Science, Engineering, Technology or Architecture.
- All applicants must document their formal academic qualifications to prove their eligibility. Only documentation from internationally recognized universities will be approved by the Swedish Council for Higher Education which manages the website universityadmissions.se.
- If an applicant is also a holder of a second degree such as a Master's degree, that may be to fulfill specific (course) requirements, it cannot be used to fulfill the general entry requirement on its own.
In your final year of Bachelor's Studies
Students in their last year of studies who don't yet have documentation of their soon-to-be-completed degree can be accepted.
Restrictions
Degrees that are constructed on one another cannot consist of the same course
Applicants who fulfill the general entry requirements for the second cycle (master’s level) programs and eventually specific entry requirements can be admitted to a master’s program. Applicants cannot be evaluated as unqualified in the qualifying academic merits which include courses from the program’s plan in those programs that they have applied for if that occurs.
Courses included in an earned first cycle degree (bachelor’s level) or professional qualification of at least 180 cr. (180hp) or the equivalent foreign qualification that are prerequisites for master’s qualifications may not be included in the higher qualifications. This also applies to prerequisite courses for master’s programs, regardless of whether they are included in the underlying qualification. *
* Local Qualifications Framework for Chalmers University of Technology - first and second cycle qualifications.
Restrictions for Citizens from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)
Chalmers cannot admit applicants with citizenship of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea only to any program or course, due to the Council Regulation (EU) 2017/1509 of 30 August 2017 concerning restrictive measures against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and repealing Regulation (EC) 329/2007.
For applicants with double citizenship of which one is of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the other of another country, the citizenship of the other country has precedence in this respect.
