The underpinning principles of comprehensive primary health care, namely: cultural safety in practice, in particular to addressing the needs of Indigenous and multi-cultural Australians; recognising the value of using a population health approach for the prevention, early detection and management of chronic diseases; providing appropriate evidence-based care; and the ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams is embedded throughout the Bachelor of Nursing program in both content and assessment. These principles combined with education in the range of core knowledge and specialist technical nursing skills ensure that graduates can retrieve and apply knowledge and information to respond appropriately and ethically to the needs of diverse populations and function professionally as a Registered Nurse in a regional and global context.

Units in this course may be offered in either internal or external mode of study. Not all units are offered in both modes. All students must attend and pass a one-week Clinical Teaching Block for every year of full-time equivalent study at either the Casuarina or Alice Springs campuses of the university.

Clinical Teaching Blocks may be held interstate from time to time depending on staff and venue availability and student numbers. Clinical Teaching Blocks held interstate are only available to students who live in that State or Territory. All other students are required to attend Clinical Teaching Blocks at either the Casuarina or Alice Springs campuses of the university. Students must also complete clinical placement units. Clinical placement units depend on the availability of placements with approved health care providers. While the university will endeavour to place students within the semester in which they are enrolled and as close to their semester address as possible, this cannot be guaranteed. It is a requirement of the course that students only attend clinical placements at the time and place approved by CDU. Failure to accept an arranged placement will result in delayed progression and completion of this course.

Enrolled nurses with a current practising certificate will receive credit for some units.

This course is also suitable for hospital-trained registered nurses with a current practising certificate and those holding a Bachelor of Nursing degree but who have let their nursing registration lapse and who have not been part of the nursing workforce in the past five years. Applicants in either of these categories will also receive credit for some units.

The course will have a range of flexible multi-modal delivery options that will include workshops, Learnline, face-to-face delivery and external.

Criminal History Check: students will be required to submit an annual National Criminal Record Check prior to commencing placement.

Students must provide proof that they have met all University and state/territory pre-clinical requirements before they can undertake those units that include clinical placements. These requirements include, but are not limited to, immunisation requirements, Senior First Aid qualification, annual criminal record checks and/or working with children clearances and/or fitness to practice requirements.

Admission Requirements

The South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) receives and processes applications for admission for Charles Darwin University Higher Education prospective students.

Enrolled nurses and hospital-trained registered general nurses must ensure they correctly answer the question relating to nursing current practising certificate when applying on SATAC's UniWeb. SATAC will attempt to confirm their registration on the online register of the relevant Nurses Board, but if SATAC is unable to do so, applicants will be asked to submit a certified copy of their certificate.

Applicants holding a Bachelor of Nursing degree but who have let their nursing registration lapse and who have not been part of the nursing workforce in the past five years will be required to provide written evidence of prior registration from the relevant Nurses Board.
