Program Description

This programme is designed to provide healthcare educators and other healthcare professional trainers with the knowledge and skills to design, develop and facilitate effective simulation training and education.

Suitable for all health care professionals with an interest or involvement in delivering training and education, the main aims of this programme are to provide you with:

  • An understanding of the principles of adult learning and how they can be applied to multidisciplinary health care simulation training.
  • An understanding of the evolution, variety and importance of human factors in healthcare practice.
  • The knowledge and skills required to design, develop and facilitate simulation training.
  • The debriefing skills required to aide learners subsequent reflection and development.

Simulation is becoming increasingly prevalent as a tool for teaching and learning in health care because it provides a safe environment in which students can develop clinical skills and non-technical skills via guided debriefing.

Why Study this Course?

Academics from the University of Birmingham, with experience in education and simulation-based training, and experienced clinicians based at the University Hospital Birmingham have designed this programme.

The programme offers you the opportunity to study the principles of experiential learning theory in healthcare simulation, the process of creating simulation scenarios and the concepts underlying safe and effective debriefing. In addition to theoretical study, the course aims to promote the wider use of simulation modalities, non-technical skills and human factors in healthcare teaching, learning and practice.

Modules

This programme comprises three distinct but complementary, compulsory 20 credit modules:

The Healthcare Simulation Delivery and Human Factors in healthcare modules are available on a stand-alone basis.

Entry requirements

A relevant first degree or an equivalent professional qualification is required, ideally in healthcare and allied specialties (including simulation technicians).

English language requirements

You can satisfy our English language requirements in two ways:

English to IELTS 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.5 in each component).

If you need help with your English language skills then support is available.

The English for Academic Purposes Presessional course is for international students who have a conditional offer to study at the University, but who do not currently meet the English language requirements. The course is tailored to your level of English and allows you to meet the English language requirements for your programme without retaking IELTS. The EAP programme runs throughout the year and offers different programme lengths ranging from 42 weeks to 6 weeks. The length of course you need depends on your future course, your existing IELTS score and the English level you need for your university degree.
