Presentation and objectivesPediatric Urology (UP), despite being a growing reality, is not an officially recognized specialty in almost any country. There is no theoretical and practical program for initial or continuing training. In Spain it has been considered for more than 10 years as a candidate to be a Specific Training Area, but the development of these areas is stopped for now. It is quite probable that, in the not too distant future, the UP will have an official and specific training program. We are aware that some hospitals, such as the Italian University of Buenos Aires and the Exequiel González Cortés of Santiago de Chile, have developed their own Training Program in Pediatric Urology and have been training Pediatric Urologists in America for some years.
Although, at first it is a medical subspecialty linked to Urology or Pediatric Surgery, little by little specific training and special dedication to PU has become necessary, becoming an area that requires qualified professionals, with the knowledge and necessary skills that are not acquired through the separate Pediatric Surgery or Urology Specialty Training Program. The UP, in addition to needing deep knowledge of both specialties, requires a specific theoretical and practical program. Thus, day by day, the need for the participation of more than one medical discipline to describe our reality becomes clear. In this sense, the UP is a good example of interdisciplinary training, in which the participation of different Medical Specialties is required to solve the problems that care for these patients needs. Although the two basic specialties are Pediatric Surgery and Urology, complementary knowledge of Gynecology, Pediatrics, Neonatology, Nephrology, Pediatric Intensive Care is necessary to develop a good comprehensive training in PU.
It is reasonable then, to promote the training of professionals in this discipline, whose teaching is not regulated during the studies of the Bachelor of Medicine, having to resort to postgraduate training of the same, which includes as teachers professionals from different specialties and areas, mentioned above.
