Program Description

The Master of Public Health (Advanced) is designed specifically for international students or those who wish to complete a 2-year program studied full-time. With sixteen subjects instead of twelve, students in the Master of Public Health (Advanced) will gain a more advanced body of knowledge. Additionally, this course is offered in Adelaide and Sydney, with the option of online study.

The Master of Public Health (Advanced) will equip health professionals from a broad range of backgrounds with the knowledge and skills to address public health challenges. Students will gain an understanding of current global and environmental health issues, health policy, systems, and economics, along with social, behavioral and cultural determinants of health.

Students will be trained in skills such as planning, implementation and evaluation of public health programs, health promotion and disease prevention strategies, advocacy, leadership and management, statistics and epidemiology and analytical and communication skills. In the Capstone project, students will have the opportunity to explore a public health issue of their choice through a 6-month research project.

This course also allows you to enter or exit with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Public Health.

Move on up and get credit

Our Master of Public Health has two other qualifications built into it. Finish four subjects, be awarded a Graduate Certificate or finish eight subjects, be awarded a Graduate Diploma.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of health policies to promote and optimize the health various populations
  • Identify and describe environmental risk factors that affect communities or population

Admissions criteria


A bachelor degree (AQF7) or above in any discipline from an Australian institution or a recognized equivalent qualification and 3 years of relevant work experience


A Graduate Certificate in Public Health from Torrens University Australia (or from another institution if deemed equivalent) plus additional 7 years of relevant work experience.


This course is available to students who require a visa to study onshore in Australia.

Approved English tests include:

  • CAE 58
  • IELTS 6.5, with no subscore less than 6.0
  • PTE 60
  • TOEFL 79

Workload and assessment


Torrens University Australia operates on a trimester system comprising of 3 study periods per year.

It is expected that each subject, whether studied online or on-campus, will involve a combined total of 120 hours of structured and self-directed learning, which equates to approximately 10 hours a week per subject over a 12-week trimester.

Assessments vary and include: critical analysis and essay writing, literature reviews, needs assessment, project development, and evaluation, in-class debates, participation in online discussion forums, short questions, research projects and reports.
