Biomolecular sciences is a very internationally oriented research and development field that benefits from strong multidisciplinary know-how in genetics, microbiology, molecular cell biology, computational and structural biology, biochemistry, and systems biology. During this Master’s Program, you will acquire in-depth knowledge and skills through upper-level theoretical and practical training. You will become highly competent in molecular biology, as well as in the more applied aspects of these fields. This will give you excellent prospects for an independent career in an academic, medical, or industrial research environment, or as a scientific consultant for the public or private sector.

Biotechnology is the exploitation of living systems or molecules from them for commercial gain. Although the word 'biotechnology' is only a few decades old, humankind has been using biotechnology for millennia, for example in baking, brewing and sewage treatment. Modern biotechnologies rely on our increasing ability to manipulate organisms at the genetic level and include novel waste treatments and bioremediations, new pharmaceuticals, the exploitation of enzymes in 'green catalysis' and exciting new diagnostic techniques. In the 20th century, our lives were transformed by information technology; the 21st century may see an equally great transformation, but this time led by biotechnology. This Master's degree aims to teach the fundamental molecular bioscience underpinning biotechnology along with examples of its current applications. Applicants are advised to apply as early as possible and ideally no later than 31st July 2022 for courses that commence in late September. In the event that any programme receives a high number of applications, the University reserves the right to close the application portal. Please note a deposit may be required to guarantee a place on the course. Due to high demand, applications may not be considered if the course has reached its maximum class size and will be placed on a waiting list.

The Master’s programme has a high proportion of scheduled lessons, and the interaction with teaching staff and course assistants is relaxed. The programme is conducted in an international environment and has strong ties with research. All of the teaching staff are researchers, and as a result, the teaching is continuously adapted based on current research. The Department of Biology has several world-leading research teams and conducts both basic researches and applied research. The language of instruction is English.

Cytotechnologists are licensed laboratory professionals who possess strong attention to detail and a passion for solving puzzles. But more than either of those things, they share a desire to improve the health of patients – many of whom they may never even see. Before turning on a microscope, cytotechnologists begin reviewing a patient’s history to see if there are areas where they should focus their attention. Next, they’ll look at a slide of a cellular specimen under the microscope attempting to spot any cellular changes and making diagnoses that range from benign/normal, to infections, precancerous lesions, and cancer.
