In the MS in Human Physiology program, you will have the opportunity to select a specialized area for research and study. As part of our broad course requirements, we offer two distinct concentrations so you can choose the track that's right for you: Research or Preclinical Accelerated.

Modern biotechnology is providing breakthroughs that are helping fight diseases, reduce carbon footprints and feed the hungry. From looking at saliva to unearthing new clues on evolution to finding a new treatment for the Zika virus, biotechnology science is a burgeoning field that continues to evolve and make a difference in our lives.

Graduate work in the Infectious Disease Concentration Area includes research at the molecular and cellular level in bacteriology, parasitology, and virology, as well as investigations of the host immune response to these agents. Programs focus on etiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic development, vaccine development, and antimicrobial therapies. Programs also focus on gene regulation and host-pathogen interactions that influence pathogenesis. Research approaches employ a wide variety of molecular, biochemical, pharmacological, and microscopic techniques, utilizing cell culture and whole organisms. Students selecting Infectious Disease will focus on one or more of these areas. A highly individualized curriculum of study is designed to meet the needs and interests of the student while satisfying selected requirements by the faculty. These include graduate-level cell biology and biochemistry, as well as graduate-level courses relating to the specific discipline chosen (bacteriology, parasitology, or virology). Additional courses may be chosen by the student and his/her advisor from a large number of college and university offerings. Students entering the Ph.D. program having completed courses equivalent to the required courses may, with the consent of their thesis committee, petition the concentration area Graduate Committee to waive these requirements.

Cytotechnologists are licensed laboratory professionals who possess strong attention to detail and a passion for solving puzzles. But more than either of those things, they share a desire to improve the health of patients – many of whom they may never even see. Before turning on a microscope, cytotechnologists begin reviewing a patient’s history to see if there are areas where they should focus their attention. Next, they’ll look at a slide of a cellular specimen under the microscope attempting to spot any cellular changes and making diagnoses that range from benign/normal, to infections, precancerous lesions, and cancer.

The Institute of Human Nutrition, situated in the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, offers highly qualified Postbac Premed students the opportunity to enrich and diversify their premedical education during a glide year prior to enrolling in medical school.

We offer you the ability to specialize in either food science or nutrition. Our food science specialization will provide you with educational and research opportunities in food systems, microbiology, and food chemistry.
